The Emery Spartans enter at No. 3 and the Carbon Dinos No. 4 in the initial RPI rankings for the 2021 season that were released Wednesday by the Utah High School Activities Association. The rankings will be updated following every game and will be used to set playoff seeding at the end of the season. The Juab Wasps landed in the top spot with the Judge Memorial Bulldogs taking second. The Union Cougars round out the top 5.
Emery is sitting at 9-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 12 play, coming off back to back wins against San Juan. They will return to the field on April 13 when they travel to Monroe to face the South Sevier Hawks. Among games remaining on their schedule are two games each with Carbon and No. 10 Richfield, who they will face in the final game of the season April 30.
The Carbon Dinos, 9-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play are coming off a 19-0 win over fellow Region 12 member San Juan. They also have the bulk of their region schedule ahead of them in which they will face three teams: Emery, Richfield and Grand twice and will play San Juan once more. They end the season on May 3 with a road contest at American Leadership Academy. The Dinos get back on the field Wednesday, April 7 at home to take on Gunnison Valley, the No.1 team in 2A.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
