The Price City Police Department are very busy keeping the community safe so it was nice that they were able to take some time from their busy schedule to come into Castle Country Radio to discuss Back to School Safety Tips.

Community members should be aware that the schools in the Carbon School District and Pinnacle Schools will begin on August 16 and this means there will be many busses traveling throughout our community. “One of the things we see as officers is to remind people when they’re out driving and they see the busses to have some patience. Those busses are making a lot of stops. But keep in mind too that when those warning flashers come on, when the stop sign gets extended, and they’re flashing, its illegal to pass those busses in either lane on either side of the road. Usually, they’re only stopping for a very short period. The last thing we ever want is for one of our students to get hit at one of these, so making sure to pay attention when you’re around those busses,” said Sgt. Kelley Maynes. Drivers are advised to watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops. Also, parents are urged to speak with their students about school bus safety and to advise them always to use caution around the bus.

Motorists should be aware that there are three new crosswalks near Mont Harmon Middle School. “I believe they put three new crosswalks up in the Mont Harmon area to help get the kids across the road safely and that’s going to be new to all our citizens. I want everybody to know about them because I will be at those crosswalks in my car watching for people not yielding to the pedestrians and children crossing the roadway. It’s important for kids when they are walking to school to make sure they’re using the sidewalks, and make sure before they enter the crosswalk, they’re still looking both ways, and making sure its clear, and the drivers that are approaching the crosswalks see them before they attempt to cross the road,” said Officer Frankie Tapia. It’s important that all drivers and pedestrians are aware of their surroundings when traveling to and from school, especially drivers traveling through any school zone areas.

Right now, Price City is currently looking for individuals to fill the role as crossing guard.  “Best way they can go about if they’re interested in being one of our substitute crossing guards is to contact either the police department or city hall and we can work them to set up an application so that they can fill that out and go through the process. You know its one of those things, crosswalks are going in the mornings and afternoons, much like the busses, so there’s not a lot of time that you are there but most of our crossing guards have done it for years, and they love it and they’re great at it,” said Sgt. Maynes. The primary job of crossing guards is to guide students safely across the street.
