The Carbon School District weekly update shines light on the Preschool Program that the district offers. This program is open to children ages 3 and 4 years old that live within the Carbon School District. Preschool Coordinator, Beverly Martinez took some time from her busy schedule to share all the details of the Preschool Program.

“Yea, I would like to give a shoutout to some of our great preschool teachers. Up at Sally Mauro we have Stacy Turpin, then at Creekview we have a new teacher, Kelly Jennings, out at Wellington, we have Torie Snyder and she also does a fabulous job. Then out at Bruin Point we also have a new teacher, this is her second year, Jennifer Carter. Then up at Castle Valley Center we have Christina Schade and Carrie Timothy,” said Martinez. The teachers are what makes the Preschool Program run so smoothly.

There is an online program called Waterford Upstart that is offered to help your child academically.  “Our state legislature funds an online preschool program that was developed by Waterford, if you’ve every heard of Waterford, it’s a school up in Salt Lake. It works on a lot of preschool concepts. It’s online, so parents sign up for it; you can sign up for it on the Carbon School District website, on the preschool page. So if you look there under resources, you’ll see a link to sign up for Upstart. It just requires 15 minutes a day of sitting down with your child and doing some preschool skills,” explained Martinez. This is a free program that is being offered for parents to help prepare their child for school.

The school was very pleased with testing scores that came from Bruin Point Elementary this year.  “They were excited that their KEEP scores were higher this year then typical. KEEP is an assessment that the state requires for all children in the state entering kindergarten, just to kind of see where they’re at when they start formal education,” said Martinez. School officials think that the program they implemented last year called Heggerty was what made for higher scores.

Reading with your preschool is something that parents can do daily, maybe even at bedtime each night. “It’s important to read to your child and not just read through a book with them but interact and engage in the book with them, like have them point to pictures and start building more and more vocabulary,” said Martinez. Parents will find that reading grows their child’s knowledge.
