Tom May was known in the Price area for his career in mining and establishing Desert Rose Miniatures horse farm. Tom and Linda began their miniature horse farm in 1992 breeding and showing their “minis” for 30+ years. Tom died November 18, 2023 of natural causes with his wife and caregiver, Linda, by his side.
A resident of Price since 1971, he enjoyed the country life. Tom served as Safety Director of Andalex Resource for 20+ years and had a great knowledge of MSHA regulations and an excellent relationship with federal and state mining inspectors.
Born and raised in a Salt Lake City Irish Catholic family, Tom graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in 1965. In 1967, he volunteered for service in Vietnam and served with distinction as a United States Army MP. After the war, Tom returned to Salt Lake City, then moved to Price in 1971. He and his brother-in-law, Sam, opened the “Sport Shop,” an outdoor adventure store, in 1971. Tom was a true outdoors man. He loved the desert country of central and southern Utah. For years he hiked, camped and went fishing. He also loved to hunt pheasant, ducks and geese with his trusty Labrador retriever.
Tom is survived by Linda, his wife and life partner of 46 years; sister and brother-in-law, Samuel and Colleen Quigley of Salt Lake City, brother, Timothy May, of Grass Valley California; four nephews, Jason Quigley (Melissa), Justin Quigley (Polly), Matthew May (Laura), and Sean May (Leslie); and 12 first cousins, members of the Hearley Irish Catholic clan out of Salt Lake City.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Margaret F. May of Salt Lake City.
