John Polito, 90, known for his sense of humor and culinary skills, passed away peacefully at his East Carbon home on January 16, 2024, with his long-time companion, Elnora Clark by his side. Born on October 8, 1933 in Cokedale, Colorado, John was the eldest and last surviving of four children born to Millie and Carmen Polito (James V. Polito, Carl J. Polito and Marie Robins).

John’s adventurous spirit led him to join the United States Navy in 1952.  Decorated for service during the Korean, Vietnam, and Cold Wars, he served aboard three surface ships (the USS Comstock, Vammen, and Nereus) and, a super-proud, “bubblehead,” aboard six submarines (the USS Volador, Raton, Gato, Guitarro, Barb, and Vallejo).  His final duty station was at the Charleston Naval Base Commissary, where he retired as a CS1 (SS) in 1972.

John’s spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his five children, Linda K. Galli, John R. Polito, Patricia G. Sloan, Randall K. Polito, and Michael S. Polito; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass, Friday, January 26, 2024, 11:00 a.m., Good Shepherd Catholic Church (201 Center Street) in East Carbon. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:50 a.m. prior to the service. John’s remains will then be interred beside his late wife, Gaylen (Stevenson) Polito in the Plantation Memorial Gardens near Summerville, South Carolina. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price and Huntington where friends are always welcome daily and may share memories of John online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net
