The Carbon Lady Dinos wrapped up the regular season with a 12-1 win in five innings over the Delta Rabbits Tuesday afternoon, clinching a share of the Region 12 Championship in the process.
Kylan Sorenson was dominant on the mound, tossing a five-inning no-hitter to close out the regular season. Sorenson recorded eight strikeouts and walked just one batter. While two other runners reached on error, it took Sorenson just 80 pitches to finish off the Rabbits.
The Carbon offense provided instant run support for Sorenson, plating the first run in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third with one out, Danica Adams laced a line drive to score Adri Abeyta. Carbon carried the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning, where they quickly put the game out of reach.
Carbon scored 11 runs in the second frame off nine hits and three walks to push the lead to double figures. Held scoreless for the final two innings, the lead was more than enough to close out the game early in just five innings due to the mercy rule.
Abeyta and Kennlee Kennedy led the team with two RBIs a piece. A total of eight Carbon players logged at least one RBI.
Sorenson helped her own cause at the plate she finished a perfect 3-3 with one walk and one RBI. Abeyta, Adams, Brielle Sandoval and Samantha Riddle all finished with two hits.
Tuesday’s win gives Carbon a region record of 12-2, placing them in a first-place tie with the North Sanpete Hawks. The two teams split the season series as each protected home field in games decided by one run.
With the regular season now complete, Carbon will await the release of the final RPI to determine their playoff seeding and matchup. The top four seeds will play host to three other schools for the opening two rounds of the 3A state tournament, which begins this Saturday.
