Unable to keep pace with the Uintah Utes, the Emery Spartans started the brand new baseball season off on the wrong foot as they suffered a 13-0 loss at home Tuesday afternoon.

Despite hanging with the 4A school for the first three innings of play, the Spartans gave up eight runs in the sixth inning and another two in the seventh. Falling behind 3-0 in the opening inning, the Spartans never managed to recover offensively.

Wyatt Cox, Tristen Deabenerfer, Logan Labrum and Bryce Dugmore all registered one hit for the Spartans. Combining for just four hits as a team the Spartans were unable to muster enough offense to score a run.

Kyler Stillson was pegged with the loss on the mound giving up three runs in the opening frame. Throughout the contest the Spartans used four different pitchers.

Emery will look to notch their first victory of the new season when they travel Friday and Saturday to Montrose, Colo. Friday the Spartans will meet Eagle Valley before a double-header on Saturday with Montrose and Delta.

Emery head coach Steve Gordon will be a guest on KOAL's 103.9 FM and 750 AM Wednesday at 4:00 pm to talk about the season opener and the upcoming weekend trip.
