This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary where Principal Connie Todachinnie took time to speak over the telephone about the end of year testing, upcoming field trips, and overall attendance.

Students have been busily working on end of the year testing and Principal Todachinnie is happy to report that it’s going very well, “For the upper grades we have our RISE Assessment which is our state end of the year testing, it’s underway. We finished writing last week, and now we’re working on science, and then we’ll continue with math and language arts. The scores that are coming in are looking good.” The other testing that is taking place is on fluency with math and reading, those scores are trickling through and have been good as well.

Once testing has wrapped up it will then be time to host the end of the year fields trips for students. “Third grade always goes to USU for a tour. We’ve got Conservation Days coming up. We’ve got the fourth grade Mountain Man Rendezvous coming up. We’ve got the Bee’s game which our fifth graders this year will be on the field for the pre-game show and that is so exciting,” said Principal Todachinnie. The big field trip for the entire school will be held at the Heights Eligibility Park in Spanish Fork. All field trip details will be shared with parents as the events grow closer.

The school is planning on hosting their end of year track meet for students to participate in. “We started holding a track meet just for Bruin Point and we have that coming up. We’re hoping to see some of our kids break their own records. We just have a lot of good things coming up,” stated Principal Todachinnie. The students really enjoy this day as they are able to mingle with one another while enjoying a day outside with the entire school.

Attendance was very important this year and it looks as though percentage wise they may beat last year’s numbers. “First quarter attendance was phenomenal, then of course you get sick, you know and second quarter drops, and then third quarter drops, then fourth quarter brings back up. So we’re hoping that we will have 90 percent attendance overall for our school, this year we set that as a goal. Last year, we had 85 percent, so far we are sitting at 90 as an average, we’ll have to see what fourth quarter brings,” explained Principal Todachinnie.
